I'm currently involved in a research project that is working on a new shape representation that is similar to SDFs, but also incorporates a viewing direction. We aim to show that this representation can produce detailed 3D shape reconstructions, and that it allows for efficient, high quality conversions to other 3D representations including SDFs, point clouds, depth images, and meshes. We plan to publish this work in the near future.
